Generally the weather in Newfoundland is great in September, except when hurricanes pass by. I had noted earlier this summer that hurricanes have usually been downgraded to tropical storms by the time they reach us. Hurricane Igor, which passed by Newfoundland on August 21, was different. Many communities in Newfoundland suffered severe damage as bridges were washed out, homes flooded, etc. There was one fatality. August Ryan Snoddon of the CBC described Hurricane Igor like this: HURRICANE IGOR AND ITS SEVERE IMPACTS CERTAINLY REPRESENT A RARE EVENT IN NEWFOUNDLAND WHICH HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS THE WORST IN MEMORY. IN STATISTICAL TERMS, THIS WAS EFFECTIVELY A 50-100 YEAR EVENT DEPENDING ON HOW ONE CHOSES TO DEFINE IT. We did not have much damage in Pouch Cove, although it made for an interesting day. We received 142 mm of rain and had wind gusts up to 147 km per hour. I hope it was an unusual event, because I do not want to see more storms like this. We were lucky in Pouch Cove. I took a few photographs from the house during the storm. I did not try to take photographs outside!I took several the next day. |
